We are proud to present you a totally new kind of accessibility stair nosing. We faced a challenge: how to improve safety and accessibility of stairs and at the same time create environmentally friendly solution that is esthetically pleasing. Glowway and big Finnish concrete manufacturer Rudus joined forces to bring new accessibility stair nosing to market.

Our new patented product gives stairs added value and safety by combining three key factors:
  1. Photoluminescent glass strip helps people to see the edge of the stairs even in total darkness and significantly speeds up evacuation times in emergency situations.
  2. Antislip strip prevents people from slipping and hurting themselves on the stairs even in wet conditions.
  3. Contrast strip helps users, especially the visually impaired, to recognize the step edge and to use the stairs in a safe manner.

Photoluminescent egress systems are becoming new normal a built environment. In the USA new buildings over 75 feet (22.86 m) in height must install Photoluminescent Exit Path Markings in all enclosed emergency exit stairwells. Requirements for accessibility and universal design principles push to create a barrier free society.

Another consideration is safety. “There is a big issue that people fall down the stairs, especially old and visually impaired people. In our discussion Senior Architect of Finnish Ministry of Environment Erja Väyrynen pointed out that single biggest issue that causes accidents on the stairs is that there is no contract” says Glowway Marketing Director Markus Klöf.

Glowway photoluminescent element is embedded in the concrete slab in molding phase. The end result is seamless and there is no costly and time consuming installation involved.

“There are no maintenance costs associated with changing damaged or old worn-out products, which is the case with tape solutions and some other retrofitted products,” says Managing Director Mikael Hyykoski.

The product has been tested against abrasion, slipperiness and photoluminescence with results surpassing the requirements. It has been tested and recommended by the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.

The product is already set in the stair treads by our partner companies.
